Ted Powell is an exceptionally versatile pianist whose wide range of musical interests serves as the foundation for his approach to working with students. He holds Bachelors and Masters degrees in piano performance from Southern Methodist University, where he studied with Dr. David Karp. There, he received top honors from the piano department, including the Paul Velluci and Paul van Katwijk awards. Ted was awarded a teaching fellowship through the Piano Preparatory Department and attended lectures in pedagogy from Sam Holland, Cathy Lysinger, and Matthew Kline. He is currently pursuing the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in piano performance at the University of North Texas under the tutelage of Adam Wodnicki.

Ted’s passion for new music has provided him the opportunity to work with distinguished contemporary music performers, most notably as a member of the SYZYGY ensemble, directed by former Eighth Blackbird member Matt Albert. He is involved in UNT’s contemporary music ensemble NOVA led by Dr. Elizabeth McNutt, as well as a frequent performer of student and faculty compositions in UNT’s Spectrum recital series. Interpreting and performing new music has strengthened Ted’s passion for improvisation, a subject in which he has incorporated into his pedagogical approach.
